The Eta Epsilon Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at the University of South Alabama has a proud and distinguished history that reflects Sigma Chi’s core values of friendship, justice, and learning. Founded in the late 1960s, the chapter grew from a local brotherhood of driven young men into a fully chartered branch of one of the nation’s most respected fraternities. Since its establishment, Sigma Chi has remained a cornerstone of Greek life at South Alabama, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, service, and excellence.

From the beginning, the Eta Epsilon Chapter has been deeply involved in campus leadership and university life. Members proudly serve as Southerners, student ambassadors, and college representatives across various academic departments. These roles showcase the chapter’s dedication to developing well-rounded men who lead by example and contribute to the success of the university community. The chapter’s influence can be felt in nearly every corner of campus, from student government to major campus events, where Sigma Chi brothers consistently represent the values of integrity, leadership, and service.

Philanthropy is another defining aspect of Sigma Chi’s identity. Each year, the chapter hosts Derby Days, a campus-wide philanthropic event that brings together students, alumni, and community members to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Sigma Chi’s national charity. Derby Days not only generates vital support for cancer research but also strengthens unity among the university’s Greek organizations and builds a positive campus spirit that embodies Sigma Chi’s commitment to helping others.

The Eta Epsilon Chapter’s dedication to excellence has been recognized at both the university and national levels. The chapter has earned numerous honors from Sigma Chi International, including multiple Jordan Peterson Awards for Chapter Excellence—a distinction given to chapters that demonstrate outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, and community service. These awards place Eta Epsilon among the top-performing Sigma Chi chapters nationwide, reflecting the brothers’ hard work and commitment to the fraternity’s ideals.

On campus, the chapter has also received honors such as the Dean’s Cup for its exceptional performance among Greek organizations, as well as multiple Intramural Titles. Its alumni remain actively involved, providing mentorship and financial support through initiatives like the Jack and Karen Rehm Endowed Scholarship, which benefits active brothers who embody the values of the fraternity.

Today, the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi continues to thrive as a symbol of brotherhood, leadership, and service at the University of South Alabama. From representing the university as campus leaders to organizing impactful philanthropic events and earning national recognition, Eta Epsilon stands as a testament to what it means to live by the ideals of Sigma Chi. The chapter’s legacy is one of lasting brotherhood and excellence—upholding the White Cross with honor, pride, and purpose for generations to come.
